Annoying features on Garmin Edge devices
I am a happy user of a Garmin Edge 840. In fact, since GPS-enabled bike computers became a thing I've only ever owned Garmin Edge devices (500, 520, 520 Plus and now 840). That, I think, says quite a lot about my perceptions of these devices.
Over time, the capabilities of these devices has increased, with new (and often connected) features available. I now routinely use live-tracking and a ConnectIQ app called Windfield which both require a bluetooth connection to a phone. Windfield is very useful as it provides upcoming weather forecast updates and shows current wind speed and direction.
Anyway, this is all well and good, but recent updates have added some features which often distract me or obscure data on the screen. There are two that particularly irritate me: Alerts and Warning (particularly potholes) and ClimbPro.
Where I live, many roads (particularly the minor roads one prefers to cycle on) are riddled with potholes. The pothole warnings are crowdsourced, both in initial reporting, but also for reporting that the road defect has been repaired. This all makes for significant annoyance when riding your bike. Sometimes you get an audible alert every few minutes - usually saying there's a pothole in 0.14 miles, then after the pothole, there's an opportunity to provide feedback as to whether the pothole is still there or has been repaired.
It's not just that these warning pop up so frequently on my local routes, nor that interacting with the dialogues would probably inject risky behaviour if one didn't stop riding to do it, but with my usual display setting with several data fields, much of the screen gets obscured by the dialogues.
And it gets worse with ClimbPro. I don't need to see a diagram of how the gradient ahead of me changes, especially where my useful data are concealed!
