Mythbuntu, part 2

Some progress.  I now have Mythbuntu 9.10 working on at least one of the TV input channels. It seems to work very well, with easy to navigate programming schedules.  The first real test to to record a couple of films this evening (Control and 24 Hour Party People as it happens - I have a long-standing affection for Joy Division and Factory Records).I've also got it daisy-chained from the Humax box, and the S-video output comes into the TV on a separate channel from the Humax box.The big challenge now is to get the remote control working, so I don't have to run it via a vnc connection from my Linux notebook.  More later

Mythbuntu, part 3

I've been playing further with Mythbuntu. Using the Mythbuntu 9.10 installation (which uses MythTV 0.22), I never managed to get the Hauppauge remote working at all. And then it seemed to me that there was a rather a lot of hard disk activity while the computer really ought to have been idle.A quick Google search suggested this might be solved by upgrading to MythTV 0.23.  This was straightforward using links at the Mythbuntu site.  I also took the plunge and upgraded to the beta2 of Ubuntu while I was at it.  This was straightforward, except I rendered the system unbootable by incorrectly answering a setup question relating to Grub2.  Rescue was straightforward, and by running grub-install from a live Ubuntu CD, as described on this useful guide to grub 2.Somewhere along the line I was asked what remote I was using, and the upshot is that I now have a partially functional remote.  It's not there yet, but there are a variety of handy wikis out there with sample configuration files for this model of remote, so I am confident I'll be able to set up full support for it.So, now onward and upward for more complete testing.

Office 2007 vs OpenOffice.org

I've been very happy with my new Dell PC (when it finally arrived after the supply problems Dell seemed to suffer over the Xmas period). Of course much of this is down to having set it up to dual boot Ubuntu 9.10 with the supplied Windows 7. (I have to say that Win7, while not exactly my cup of tea, performs considerably better than the Vista Business I tried a few years ago).Since we bought this PC largely for working from home, I've been prevailed to see what the 60 day trial of Office 2007 is like, with a view to buying it if we like it. Now, what's never been clear is whether that's 60 days from purchase of the PC, or 60 days from activation. I assumed thelatter.So I clicked the desktop icon, which set in place the process.  First I had to install some ActiveX script to install an Office 2007 update.  presumably, therefore, the system detected I had an out of date trial of Office.  This update, incidentally, seemed to relate to the USA and its dependencies - I assume in the Redmond World that the UK is now a dependency of the USA.  As far as I could see, it was a patch to remove code infringing software patents at the end of 2009 (see for example this article).So, being a dutiful user, and quite keen to have a look at office 2007, I followed the onscreen instructions.  Everything installed.  Next step, click the big green "continue" button.  Oh Dear! A typically opaque message.

&mbsp;We are sorry, but we are unable to complete your request.The following problem(s) exist:The Microsoft Office Activation Assistant was unable to detect a 2007 Microsoft Office release.
And that's where it ends.  If I click the trial icon on the desktop, I get the same message.  I did a quick Google and found numerous pages discussing the message, but frankly can't be bothered to pursue this as I'm quite happy with OpenOffice.org for my office software suite.  And Openoffice.org was installed in full on my PC when I installed Ubuntu 9.10.  And in full when I installed the Windows package downloaded from OpenOffice.org.  As the insurance meerkat (and the ensuing interweb meme) might say: "simples".

Flies & Bikes commenting system

Since I overhauled this website a couple of years ago, the main focus on the site has been through the Joomla! blogging extension MyBlog. This is a commercial extension from Azrul, and I have to say I've been very pleased with it.

Unfortunately I'm less enthusiastic about Azrul's commenting extension, JomComment, designed for use with MyBlog. It has a caching activity, which seems to generate huge numbers of files which are supposed to be deleted each time a comment is posted. Well, maybe I suffer from a paucity of readers willing to comment, but the cache just grows and grows indefinitely. I have tried commenting, but no decline in the sheer volume of the JomComment cache.

Ghostery Firefox plugin sold

I picked the news that Better Advertising Acquires Ghostery via the No DPI forum.  Ghostery is a very popular plugin that identifies tracking scripts on webpages, and offers the option of blocking said scripts.   I'm not sure how significant this will prove to be, but I note from the Better Advertising web page that

I'm not sure that the acquisition of Ghostery by this lot is a good thing, and it's probably worth keeping an eye on the situation.  The NoDPI forum also points out a bug in the current Ghostery plugin which causes Firefox to take ages to close down.  This is something I've noticed lately, but not pinned down.

Adventures in 7

Last week, I took delivery of the first new desktop PC I've bought in several years. One of the driving motivations was the form factor of the computer: I wanted a bigger screen than commonly available with a laptop, but also to keep the main box's footprint as small as possible. A decent keyboard & mouse also appreciated.  Just before Xmas, a flier from Dell plopped out of a magazine, and the Inspiron Zino caught my eye. This has a wireless keyboard and mouse, with a pretty small case. The monitor was extra. With Windows 7 upgraded from Home to Professional, the whole package was well under £500.

This is my first exposure to Windows 7 (other than looking at other peoples' laptops). I did have Vista on the Sony notebook that currently runs Ubuntu 9.10, but the notebook's specification was woefully underpowered for Vista, which made for a pretty vile experience. Plus 95% of my computer usage is with Linux these days (mostly Ubuntu). Windows was selected because the household uses both Windows and Linux.

Since receiving the PC, I've installed Ubuntu 9.10 on a partition, and have been setting up various bits of hardware and software (an on-going process). I think the comparison between the two systems is interesting from several perspectives.

For users moving from WinXP to Win7, I reckon there'll be a bit of a learning curve (there certainly has been for me). Everything's there, but arranged in slightly different ways. Icons are rather over-elaborate, making their function a little hard to discern at times. The start menu is vile (as it was in Vista), and makes it a bit of a pain to find programmes. It's possible this can be addressed in some setting tweak however (hints and tips most welcome via the commenting!). There's a nice Mac-style floating tool bar thing that's easily configurable to auto-hide off the edge of the screen. Not sure if that's a default feature of Win7 or if it's just themed by Dell.

The PC is blessed by an almost complete lack of crapware (Thank you Dell, thank you!). On the other hand, the default install doesn't really come with much in the way of serious software. There is a 60 day trial of Office 2007, and a default installation of Works. It came with McAfee antivirus/security software, which rather annoyingly set itself up without giving me the opportunity to say no - as my work network requires that we use Sophos, this was irritating. I set up VPN very easily. The PC sees the home network reasonably effectively, though I find the default layout of the Windows 7 file manager rather confused.
Overall, I find Windows 7 to be pretty good as far as it goes - rather a snappy boot time, but not much to do with it once it's booted. I downloaded GIMP. I downloaded Firefox 3.6 and a bunch of my favourite add-ons. The default browser with 7 is of course Internet Explorer, complete with a single search engine. Bing. With the IE shortcuts consigned to oblivion and replaced with the curly fox, I set about exploring. First up, to get the backup system working (this had been trivial with the Ubuntu partition). I had to identify and download a cygwin installation with rsync and ssh. After a few false starts, I got that done. I set up folders to share and got the rsnapshot.config syntax set up OK. Did a test run, no dice, appeared to be a firewall issue (confirmed by turning the firewall off for a brief period). No problemmo, just open a port. OK, how? I have to identify a programme, then point the firewall interface to the exe file to open a port (no indication what the port number is). Yep, works.

I installed iTunes (not my most favourite programme in the world, but I use it for the iPod Touch) - looks as though migrating my iTunes library may be a bit complex. Decide to postpone this. I go to install a driver for my printer (HP 2575). No joy, it's not listed. I wander off to the HP website, where a 378Mb download is available. Blimey! 378Mb! I decline. I notice an search for drivers option on the original Win 7 dialogue box. Click it. After a significant wait, lo and behold! a driver is available, which I download and install. I've no idea what it is, how big it is, or where it's from, but it can't be the monstrous HP file, since it sets itself up pretty quickly. And it works.

In contrast, the Ubuntu installation came with just about anything needed, with everything else (just about) available on demand via Synaptic. And it wasn't until jumping in and out of both OSs for a couple of evenings that I realised just what it was that I was finding difficult with Win7 (which to be honest, I don't actually dislike particularly).  This was a sense of constraint. I felt constrained by having only one desktop, by not really being able to change the desktop theme beyond basic colour and image options. Constrained by not knowing exactly what was in the various updates the system has been downloading. Constrained by software availability. And constrained by all the tweaks I'm able to implement on Linux but not on Win 7 (top must be a showdown between the guake terminal and being able to set double-clicking the window titlebar to roll up the window).

Postscript: Amid the myriad of small booklets that arrived in the box was a brief guide to the Ubuntu desktop! From the look of it, aimed at first time users of the Netbook version of Ubuntu...

Wordpress Integration for Joomla! 1.5

Well, here we go!  Another website reorganisation - these re-jigs seem to happen every couple of years.  This time, I've taken the plunge and decided to switch from Azrul's MyBlog (and its counterpart commenting system jomComment) to corePHP's Wordpress Integration for Joomla! 1.5.This will no doubt be an ongoing overhaul, but first impressions are pretty favourable.  CorePHP have developed a set of Joomla! components and modules that integrate the very popular blogging software Wordpress into Joomla! 1.5.  Installation of the principal component was straightforward, as was the import of my existing blog entries from MyBlog.  The system seems pretty neat: there are some sidebar modules that can be set to hold the various Wordpress widgets.  I suppose there are some downsides to relying on developers keeping up with the latest Wordpress releases, but the version installed seemed not to be particularly old (though not the latest).Documentation appears to be a little light - sufficient for installation to be easy, but not so helpful on aspects of installing the Wordpress plugins that have been modified/developed for the integrated Wordpress.  However, corePHP's website has an active support forum, and it seems that support is good - which is as it should be given this is a paid subscription.So, why did I switch from MyBlog?  Mostly because I found the MyBlog interface (both front- and back-end) rather clunky, and the JomComment component seems to build up a very large file cache.  And I mean very large - if not manually cleared, the backup component I use cannot work, and I run out of server disk space. And, of course, my experiences with a standalone Wordpress installation (Wonderful Life) had exposed me to the inner workings of running a Wordpress blog.

In which I have a problem with Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala

I've been visiting a couple of prestigious Research Institutions this week, and delivering presentations of my current research work. This was fine and dandy - I'd updated my standard presentation as appropriate to the audience, and with new data. For this I generally use Open Office, which has a rather good presentation app, called Impress.

Unfortunately, I ran into an issue with output of the slideshow to a projector. My laptop is a slightly aged Sony VGN-TX5XN - about 2.5 years old, with a meagre 1Gb RAM onboard. As soon as I plugged in the cable to the projector, the display went black, with only an immobile mouse cursor visible. I rescued the situation by using a PowerPoint version I'd made (not perfect, but good enough for the job) on the host's XP laptop.

In which I (partially) solve a problem with MS Exchange 2007

So, here's the situation.  I've been happily using the Evolution email/calendar software with Ubuntu GNU/Linux for several Ubuntu releases for some time now.  Of course, this was with the MS Exchange 2003 that my workplace uses.  No problem, using the exchange connector plugin for Evolution.

Earlier this year we were upgraded to Exchange 2007, whereupon everything changed - I was no longer able to access the mailserver or calendar.  Aha! I thought, I'll find an appropriate plugin for Evolution.  Well, that was a little easier to say than achieve.  Firstly, many websites refer to an apparently now unavailable plugin named Brutus.  Secondly, after I identified the plugin to use (evolution-mapi), it didn't seem to work.

Evolution, MS Exchange 2007 and Ubuntu 9.10

A quick update on the blog article on persuading Evolution to cooperate with  MS Exchange 2007.

I can confirm that the procedure works fine, that I can read/send emails, view edit my calendar, and view/edit tasks.  Contacts access seems a bit flaky, however.  And my work's Exchange server appears to be set up to require a secure VPN connection when using Evolution off-site.  Which I suppose is no bad thing.

Blogging tools

I've been playing around with a number of blogging tools, looking for something that will run with each of my blogs (I'm using Joomla! 1.5, Wordpress and Blogger).  An additional complication is that in this website, I'm using a specific blogging module called MyBlog.  Over the last few weeks I've tried the following:
Blogilo (formerly Bilbo Blogger - a name I prefer!) - this is a Linux desktop application with which one can compose blog posts offine, then upload to the blog when ready.  It definitely works very nicely with my self-hosted Wordpress blog, but whenever I try setting up my Blogger account, it just dies.  For Wordpress, then, very versatile.  I couldn't at that time see how to hook it up to my Joomla sites (but see below).
BloGtk - A Gnome application for the Linux desktop.  I couldn't get either Wordpress or Blogger accounts set up with it.
Gnome-blog - potentially really nice toolbar app for the Gnome desktop.  I persuaded this to connect to my Blogger account ona desktop PC, but not using my laptop.  I couldn't find much advice on the interweb.
Drivel - An attractive name and interface, but again, I couldn't make it see the Blogger account, and couldn't figure out how to get it to work.
Deepest Sender - a Firefox add-on for blogging while exploring the web.  Has a very attractive interface, seems to set up well with Blogger, but throws an error when posting the article.  Didn't test with Wordpress.
And finally - ScribeFire - another Firefox add-on, and a bit more fully functional that Deepest Sender.  This definitely works with Blogger, and I've set up an account for the Wordpress blog.
I wondered whether ScribeFire could be made to work with Joomla - a quick Google search came up with this blog article: Posting to Joomla with ScribeFire.  I've followed the steps, and this is the first attempt to post in MyBlog within my Joomla site.  Here's hoping. (Though I can't see how to add tags to the post, and nor does it offer to complete meta info fields)

Google Chrome browser beta for Linux

Google's Chrome browser is now out in beta for Linux (Google Chrome for Linux).  Installation on Ubuntu Karmic 32 bit is straightforward, and the app launches quickly.  Only been running it for a short while, but so far, I've noticed:

1 - The default Chrome window doesn't obey my normal window management.  So the title bar is different, and the behaviour also differs (I have my windows set to roll up when the title bar is double clicked - in Chrome double clicking maximises the window).  However, the options in Chrome are easily accessed, and it's obvious there how to set Chrome's appearance to that of the rest of my desktop.

2 - On first run, Chrome offers to import data from Firefox -  this seems to be effective and quick.  Bookmarks seem to be moved effectively.

3 - Been quickly looking through Chrome extensions, and installed a couple.  As an inveterate Firefox extension user, I would miss quite a few of my favourite extensions, including this one, ScribeFire, which I use for blogging to a variety of blogging platforms (Joomla, Wordpress and Blogspot).  There's a neat-looking  Chrome extension for Blogger, which will bear investigationure the number of extensions will grow rapidly.

I'm looking forward to using Chrome...it's too early to say whether I'll make a major shift to using it.  At the very least having it is essential for website development.

Fresh installation of Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala)

I've been thinking about doing a fresh installation of Ubuntu Gnu/Linux on my now venerable Sony notebook for some time.  I had a number of reasons for this - firstly I wanted to eliminate the two partitions associated with Vista (spit, spit), which really wasn't able to run effectively on the limited resources the notebook had to offer.  Secondly, over the last couple of years of 6-monthy updates, I've installed a variety of now unnecessary software (including much installed outside of the excellent packaging system) - much of this seemed to lead to fairly lengthy boot-up time, and I wanted to see how Karmic performs in this regard.  Finally, I was interested to see how the Ubuntu installer works nowadays.

One of the stumbling blocks to wider acceptance of Linux (as far as I can see) is the installation of an OS - most PC users never do this: they buy a computer with a stock install of some version of Windows. I recently received the January 2010 issue of Linux Format (it's always struck me as quite bizarre that the cover dates of computer magazines )are set so far in the future!) with a DVD containing Mandriva, OpenSuse 11.2 and an LXF remaster of Ubuntu 9.10.

The installation process (if defaults are selected) seems to be about 8 steps, including easy setting up of language, time zone etc.  The partitioning step is something that I always get nervous about (I am often reinstalling and I worry about losing data.  There are a few options: to install alongside the existing OS, using the whole disk, or the advanced partioner.  I chose the advances option and removed the Vista and Vista backup ntfs partitions, the existing Ubuntu root partition, and set up the partition table afresh, maintaining the partition mounting as /home.  It's never seemed sensible to me that the default install doesn't set up a separate /home partition.  The partitioner is really very straightforward, if you have a bit of experience, and for the beginner, the default partition is easy to select.

Installation, from accepting the partition arrangement to a bootable system was very quick - unfortunately I didn't time it, but it did seem rather quicker than I'd found in the past, well under an hour to reach a functional state.  Once into the system, I installed a shed-load of software I routinely use, mostly through Synaptic, and did a system update.  It was really easy to restore all my desktop settings to the way I like them.

  • There are the usual irritations related to US patent law affecting sound and video codecs, but the Ubuntu forums and wikis steer one very clearly through stages required to enable (for example) DVD playing.  This page - Restricted Formats - in particular was very helpful.
  • The installation of Crossover Office (now named Crossover Linux - a user friendly implementation of Wine) went west, but I wasn't too depressed about that as I'm not overwhelmingly convinced I need Windows software at the moment.  In any event, I checked my account over at Codeweavers and was able to download a deb installer.
  • The GRAMPS genealogy database installed straight off from the deb file (the repos always lag), and there were no problems with the existing dataset.
  • Firefox was a bit of a pest until I persuaded it to look at the correct config folder in my home directory
  • I installed the Bibus bibliography app from the Karmic repositories - I still have to configure it, though I'll probably install the latest deb from the Bibus site first.
  • Various bits and bobs from Google:  Chrome browser; Picasa;

Still remaining: I need to set up ssh connections to the backup computer (notebooks are backed up daily using backuppc).    I dare say there will be one or two issues...

Windows 7

I had thought of writing a pointless article about the launch of Windows 7 earlier this week, but really, I couldn't be bothered.  The big news in the OS world for me is next week's release of Ubuntu 9.10 'Karmic Koala'.  I've been running Karmic in alpha and then beta for some time now, very happily.  It's running on a 2.5 year old Vaio laptop that was never really capable of running the Vista Business that it came with, and very nice it is too (last week I booted into Vista last week for the first time since January 2008, but quickly decided I'd had enough of interminable spinny "wait...wait...wait" type cursors).

Despite my dislike for Microsoft's bullying business style, I kinda hope that the gargantuan misadventure that was Vista may be behind them.  Certainly there's quite a bit of enthusiasm for Windows 7 out there (and I don't just mean the breathless puffery at the likes of the BBC website), but quite a bit of it seems to be based on the observation that "it's not Vista".  Many commentators are saying however that for many a significant hardware upgrade is still going to be needed to get the max out of Windows 7.

Drupal vs Joomla! part 4: Still exploring Drupal

Some months ago, I wrote briefly on my early attempts at developing a website with Drupal. (see Drupal vs Joomla! part 1, part 2 and part 3)  I was pretty impressed by Drupal, but considered it had some odd omissions from the default installation.  In particular, the lack of a stock WSIWYG editor seemed pretty glaring, especially as installing an editor turned out to be so fiddly.

Does anyone use Sidewiki?

Some weeks ago, I noted the existence of Google's Sidewiki (Is Sidewiki evil? (Probably not, but it's annoying)) and mentioned that I'd planned to install a Sidewiki blocker on my websites.  Well, I've done that.  I've also installed the Google Toolbar thing, and now have a Sidewiki button nestled up there next to my Firefox URL box.

Every so often, I click on it to see if a website has any Sidewiki annotation, but thus far, I've yet to see one.  Does this mean that Sidewiki's a flop?  Or just reflect the nature of the sites I visit (many are forums or blogs with pages of relatively transient interest)?  And need I have bothered to install a Sidewiki blocker at all?

Thanks to Joomlapack...

I've been having all sorts of problems with the North Bucks Road Club website.  These manifest themselves at intermittent connection problems earlier this week, followed by complete loss of function yesterday morning.  A bit of probing revealed that the issue lay with the hosting company (it's not the company that hosts this site) - as far as I could tell, database connections were timing out.

Yesterday lunchtime, this became more severe, with no access whatsoever.  I have had a series of recent backups using Joomlapack, an excellent Joomla! extension that backs up entire websites.  After a number of false starts (consuming several hours yesterday evening), I was able to restore a functional site on a local PC, thereby reassuring myself that at least the backup was functional.

Firefox, Opera and Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty

Here's a weird thing.  A couple of weeks ago, my Vaio notebook that's been running sequentially updated versions of Ubuntu GNU/Linux for the last 2.5 years started playing up on me with apparently random lock-ups.  This didn't start after any specific event or software installation.  I've Googled this, looked in Ubuntu Forums (and indeed started a thread there) to find an answer.  The symptoms are:

  1. Display frozen, except the mouse/trackpad pointer can be moved
  2. No keyboard input
  3. No trackpad buttons work
  4. The ongoing processes are still running - I can login from another terminal

This always seems to happen when I'm using Firefox (I am currently on 3.5.1), which is by far my favourite web browser, though this might just reflect both the amount of activity when using that app as well as the number of times I use Firefox each day.  Often the hang occurs when I'm scrolling down a page (which I do by stroking the edge of the trackpad).

X freeze on Notebook - solved?

This bug report at the Ubuntu Launchpad ([i965] X freezes starting on April 3rd) seems to describe the problem I've been having over the last few weeks with my notebook running Ubuntu Jaunty 9.04.  In essence, at some point, usually 2-24 hours after the last boot, the system will freeze up - the display is immobile (though the mouse pointer moves) and there appears to be no input from keyboard or trackpad buttons.  Other than that, the system is running happily, as far as I can tell from logging in remotely.

In a previous blog post (Firefox, Opera and Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty), I'd thought that the problem lay with Firefos, but that turned out not to be the case.  From the bug report, it would seem to be related to the Intel graphics card the current theory being:

Weird X freeze on Ubuntu 9.04, part umpteen

Over the last week (while I've been working away, and needing the use of my Ubuntu notebook) I've continued to have issues regarding the weird X freezes I've been having sporadically for the last few weeks (X freeze on Notebook - solved?).  Unfortunately, all the fiddling around with the system were to no avail, and the problem continued.

Seeing the claim that the bug was resolved in the upcoming Ubuntu 9.10 "Karmic Koala" release, I decided to update the system to the current alpha version of Karmic.  I did this with some trepidation, as I would usually wait until the official release before updating Ubuntu.  Interestingly, I've yet to find any irritating alpha bugs (but it's early days) - it's also a bit early to say whether the X freeze bug has really been resolved.  If not, I'll do a fresh reinstall.  As I type this, I've had a cumulative uptime of 10h42m...so let's hope this is sorted, as it's a bit of a showstopper bug.
